MLK Shaped Our Legacy, Will a New Controversy Reshape His?

American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. is remembered by many as being brave and virtuous. However, a new insight into history will have many reconsidering whether he has the latter character trait.

King biographer and historian David Garrow accessed archived FBI tapes and revealed that King apparently “looked on and laughed” as a Baptist minister friend raped an innocent woman.

Many of the FBI records also provided new insight onto King’s works since it bugged his hotel room at Washington in 1964. The activist had affairs with dozens of women. According to one of the tapes, King joked that he “had started the ‘International Association for the Advancement of P***y-Eaters.’”

In the era of “Me too”, many were divided on how to react to the shocking revelations. Standpoint Magazine called King as “the Harvey Weinstein of the civil rights movement.”

Others dismissed the claims as character assassination while some wondered whether King’s statues and name should be removed from public places, echoing what happened to Southern Civil War generals.

Some cynics claimed that it was typical for politicians to behave inappropriately and instead blamed the public for being naive about it.

However, another group of people simply believe that his personal misdeeds do not out-weigh his contribution to nation-wide racial equality.

Similarly, the last group of people, who are naturally skeptical of law enforcement or the general establishment, will remain committed to honoring MLK’s legacy. They are in denial, at least for now.
