As transgenders become more ‘woke’ at their perceived status as second-class citizens, the more belligerent ones are accusing cisgenders, or more specifically the cisgenders of the traditional white male patriarchy, or being extremists.
“Sexual minorities like us face discrimination in every part of life, including in jobs, dating, and religion,” says Merx, a 26-year-old who identifies as gender-queer and claims to be unemployed since employers seemed stunned at her sex-ambiguous appearance.
The art degree graduate lives and attempts to find work in the suburbs of Montgomery, Alabama. Most of the state is conservative, and thus “social justice unfriendly.”
“I was raised as Christian and kicked out of church after I came out as gender-queer,” she explains. “Since, I was AFAB (Assigned Female at Birth), people still thought I was 100% female and they thought I was a lesbian since they knew I was always attracted to girls.”
“But I’m not quite a lesbian,” she defended herself. “If I had to guess, I’d say I’m about 70% female and 30% male.
Merx ‘microdoses’ on testosterone to “enhance her male side”.
Besides testosterone treatment, more radical forms of remedies, such as sex reassignment surgeries, have been developed as society grapples with how to intercept the concept of gender. Legally, debate has rose over how to identify gender on official documents, such as passports and driver licenses, as well as how to accommodate them in bathrooms and locker rooms.
“They can’t define us with outdated terms,” she said. “If I’m part female, am I part lesbian then? What about my male side?”
“They call me extremist for my views, but conservative cisgenders are extremists for hating on transgenders,” she said, “I mean, they’re even born as extremists since they occupy extreme ends of the gender spectrum.”
“Everyone need to know that the human biology and sexuality is complicated,” she said, “but society makes it more confusing by defining it. They think they make it more clear, but they do not.”
“People are confused when I explain it,” she said, “but they don’t see that I’m also confused myself. So what am I?”
