Gone are the days where average blue collar job cans provide reliably feed a family. Liberals pride themselves on financially empowering the poor, but only through better welfare, not better education.
The problem is that welfare traps the poor in poverty and dependence, while education encourages financial independence. So why is higher education, which consists of liberal-dominated institutions, so expensive?
Do liberals really expect the poor can educate themselves out of poverty, when their university tuitions are rising eight times faster than wages are? A summer job used to be enough to pay tuition, but now former students are spending over 40 years paying off student loans.
So has the quality of universities increased so much that it justifies the rapid price inflation? Absolutely not, are “critical thinking” classes really teaching critical thinking with so much pro-left biases? Next, there is a rise of “victimhood studies” majors, such as various types of gender studies, religious studies, and racial studies. Jobs aren’t going to students with these majors; it’s mostly the ones that study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and business.
But since these non-profit universities actually function like for-profit businesses, they’re expanding “victimhood study” programs to attract students. If liberals really care about students, why aren’t they steering them towards earning well-paying degrees?
So what’s the result? It’s students going into debt to study useless majors to get useless degrees to get useless jobs, if they’re lucky enough to get one. Student loans are now the largest type of US non-housing debt, and with lousy career prospects, many will never be debt-free. Can an “expert”, who only can decide what bathrooms people should use (gender studies), realistically earn enough to pay off their loans?
And this has economic and societal effects too. Many college graduates or dropouts can only afford to vote for welfare policies since they’re trapped in debt and low-wage jobs. Their odds are so terrible that many will never be able to pull themselves by the bootstraps, which leads to them venting their frustrations through ‘equality’ protest movements, such as Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter, and Antifa. The American Dream is slowly dying, and we all know who leads the institutions that are killing it.
