Despite warnings from President Trump and American intelligence, France has continued to embrace Chinese-style censorship and technology.
First, France has joined the Christchurch Call, which was created in the wake of mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand. While the group calls for censorship of online extremism to combat terrorism, it conveniently ignores that the conservatives have been censored over more un-violent content.
Second, French President Macron has repeated dismissed America’s advice to ban Huawei, stating that there “is no over-protectionism vis-a-vis any of the big global tech (firms) because we need them to fertilize our ecosystem, we want to stronger and stronger and create maximum jobs”.
It’s understandable that Macron wants to create more French jobs, especially considering the intensity of the yellow jacket protests, but experts find that relying on Huawei for job-creation is laughable.
“That essentially means average white-collar French citizens can be turned into de-facto Chinese agents”, stated Adam Bowian, an analyst at the US State Department. In addition, even a single company as large as Huawei cannot single-handily save France’s unemployment crisis.
Other than finding common ground with Chinese tech., Macron has been more hostile to US tech. For example, France created a 3% levy tax on US tech. firms, such as Amazon, Google, and Facebook.
Unfortunately, historians say this adds to long history of France “switching sides”.
First, France was torn between pro-Nazi Vichy France and pro-Allied Free France.

Second, France was helping Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein build Weapons of Mass Destruction until the 1980’s while otherwise pursuing a pro-EU identity policy.
Third, France initially declined to support America’s War on Terror while seeking closer ties with NATO.
“What’s the fourth instance of French betrayal?” asked Bowian, “Will it be giving up US friendship and freedom for Chinese censorship and money?”
“If anything, France is just as unreliable and bipolar as an ally can be,” he concluded.
