President Trump has frequently stated that Congressional Democrats are unreliable allies and, today, they may have proven him correct.
Heather Caygle from the Politico reported that “Democrats have pushed President Donald Trump for months to take a tougher stance towards China on trade. But now that Trump has taken their advice, he finds himself on an island with no lifeline from Democrats.”
It’s unclear whether the liberal party’s betrayal is deliberately meant to sabotage Trump or if the betrayal is them “chickening out” after the president suddenly increased tariffs on China due to negotiations slowing. Although experts say that the latter is more likely, they are certain that it reflects poorly on Democrats, especially as the 2020 election nears.
An example of a Democrat who turned against Trump’s tariffs is Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who recently told Trump to “stay tough” and told the media that “I would focus everything on China.” But this Thursday, he said he doesn’t “fully agree” with the latest tariffs.
So far, it seems that Schumer betrayed the tariffs because he underestimated Trump’s boldness to push forward, and not because he was plotting to abandon the president. Ironically, Schumer has also called the latest tariff a “weak solution” despite being the one to succumb to pressure.
Next is Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is relatively tough on China – at least by Democrat standards. She merely said that tariffs were “something that needed to be done”, but then started to criticize Trump’s tariffs on Europeans. But why? The latest tariffs were not aimed at Europe.

Ironically, the Democrats has portrayed themselves as the party that always’s protected workers, citing policies such as minimum wages increases. However, they failed to muster enough courage to rally behind Trump’s protectionist tariffs as the trade war gets tougher and tougher.
“With just one policy, one big swoop, I’m afraid people will think Trump has done more for American workers than the Democrats have in decades”, admitted a anonymous retired Democrat congresswoman.
